Win a Romantic Break for Two To Mozambique

Maputo, the capital and largest city of Mozambique, sits on the shore of the Indian Ocean. The city is often bypasses by tourist, as they flock to the famous Mozambican beaches. Maputo, however, has a lot to offer and is definitely worth a visit!

Maputo is also known as the City of Acacias, in reference to acacia trees commonly found along its avenues, and the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Before independence (in 1975) it was called Lourenço Marques and was a popular playground for not only Portuguese but also many South African tourists.

Today, it is a port city, with its economy centered on the harbour. There is still plenty of evidence of the former (colonial) glory, with many old Portuguese houses, some in ruins, to be found in the city centre. However, the city is changing fast; new, modern high rises increasingly determine the skyline of Maputo, all along the Marginal the beaches have been widened, a promenade is being constructed and new hotels are going up before your eyes.

Maputo boasts a lot of interesting buildings and monuments, such as the famous (newly renovated) train station, the Cathedral, the colourful Central Market, the fort downtown and the Iron House. The city is small enough to explore on foot, and great walking tours, showing you everything from Maputo top 10, to Colonial and Art Deco architecture, are available.

Another not to be missed sight is the historic neighbourhood of Mafalala, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Maputo. This modest “bairro”, in the middle of town, is the cradle of Mozambique. Politicians, entrepreneurs, footballers, all come from Mafalala. During the day you can lounge, have a coffee in many of the cafés and restaurants, or enjoy the famous prawns or piri piri chicken. If you’re in the mood for some souvenir shopping, there are a few good places around town, but your best bet is to go to FEIMA. This little haven in the city offers a permanent selling place to vendors selling all the crafts you can think of. And after the shopping you can rest and relax under the trees at one of the two available restaurants.

If you’re a night owl, take advantage of Maputo’s vibrant live music scene and go to a concert at one of the many venues the city has to offer. Some tried and tested places are the French Cultural Centre, the long established ‘musician’s hangout’ Gil Vicente and the more locally orientated Xima bar, where you can find Mozambicans dance to national artists till the wee hours of the morning. If you still have the energy you can wind down (or keep dancing) in the ‘place to be’ on a Sunday evening: Nucleo de Arte. This, the oldest artist association in the city, gets packed with people dancing to local bands every Sunday from 19h00.

These are just a few ideas of how to fill your time in Maputo, but the city has much more to offer, so start exploring!
